$1,000 a month is 20 customers at $50, or 7 at $149. You do not need an audience to get there. You need one narrow buyer, a clear price and the nerve to ask for money in the first conversation.

1. Pick one buyer with one painful month-end

Do not sell to "small businesses." Pick one group, like Shopify store owners doing $10k-$100k a month, or solo bookkeepers handling 15+ clients. Both lose hours every month categorizing transactions and chasing receipts. Write one sentence: "I help [buyer] close their books in [time] instead of [current time]."

2. Set a price before you talk to anyone

Use two tiers. For business owners: $49/month for one entity. For bookkeepers and accountants: $149/month for up to 20 clients. Bookkeepers are often the faster path to $1,000 because one yes is worth three owner signups. Add a founding offer: first 10 customers lock in 40% off for life if they pay today.

3. Find buyers where they already complain

Search Reddit: r/Bookkeeping, r/smallbusiness, r/shopify, r/Etsy and r/Accounting for "reconciliation," "QuickBooks categorize," "behind on books" and "month end close." Search X and LinkedIn for "behind on my bookkeeping" or "hate doing my books." Join the QuickBooks Community, Xero Community and Facebook groups for bookkeepers and save every person describing the problem you solve.

4. Send short, specific messages

Message 15 people a day, one at a time. Example to a bookkeeper: "Saw your post about spending Sundays categorizing client transactions. I built a tool that does the first pass from bank feeds and flags only the ones it is unsure about. Want me to run it on one client's last month for free and show you the result?" Send no links in the first message and do not pitch features.

5. Do the work for them, then ask for money

Get read-only access or a CSV export and run their real data. Show them the categorized month on a 15-minute call. Then ask directly: "This took you about 6 hours last month. It's $149 a month, or $89 if you start today as a founding customer. Want me to send the payment link now?" Then stop talking and wait.

6. Charge on the call with a Stripe link

Create a Stripe Payment Link for each tier before the call and paste it in the chat while you are still talking. Do not offer a free trial after you have already shown results on their data. If they hesitate, offer the first month at $1 with the full price after, but take card details now.

7. Turn each customer into the next one

After two weeks of use, ask: "Do you know one other bookkeeper or store owner who is behind on their books? I'll give you both a free month." Bookkeepers know other bookkeepers, so this works well. Write down the hours each customer saved and use their own words in your next messages.

8. Repeat daily until you hit $1,000

Track one number: paid customers multiplied by price. At 15 messages a day, aim for 3 calls and 1 paid customer a week, and adjust the buyer or message if you fall short after two weeks. Hulby, an AI cofounder, finds these conversations and drafts these messages daily for founders who want help keeping the pace.

Mistakes to skip

  • Selling to every small business instead of one niche with the same software and the same pain.
  • Offering long free trials instead of showing results on their real data and charging on the call.
  • Pitching AI features when buyers care about hours saved and fewer reconciliation errors.
  • Ignoring bookkeepers and accountants, who pay more and bring multiple clients.

Questions

How much should I charge for an AI bookkeeping tool?

Start at $49/month for business owners and $149/month for bookkeepers with multiple clients. Raise prices after your first 10 customers.

Should I sell to business owners or bookkeepers first?

Bookkeepers if you want fewer sales to reach $1,000. Owners if your tool replaces a bookkeeper entirely. Test both for a week and follow the faster yes.

Will people trust an AI with their financial data?

Some will not at first. Ask for read-only access or a CSV export, explain exactly what you store, and show results on their own data before asking for payment.

How long does it take to reach $1,000 a month?

It depends on how many conversations you have. Founders sending 15 targeted messages a day and charging on calls usually learn within a few weeks whether the offer works.
